Attar Gulab || Essence of Rose
Attar Gulab is known for evoking feelings of self-love, and love for others.
This perfume is hundreds of years old, valued for its calming, grounding and expansive qualities.
Discovered by Empress Nur Jahan's mother, Gulab has been used in royal courts since Mughal times
Rose Otto (Damascan rose) was highly prized for its fragrance in its native Persia, before it travelled to India, most likely when the Mughals invaded. The discovery of rose oil happened later, in the late 16th-early 17th century in the royal Mughal court in India.
It was Empress Nur Jahan's mother, Salima Begum, who discovered Ruh Gulab (the oil of Rose Otto) while distilling rose water. Heat caused the rose oil to separate from the water and rise to the surface, and as she collected this she realised it possessed a strong and exquisite fragrance. This discovery led to the distillation of Ruh Gulab (essential oil of Rose Otto) on a larger scale, and later to the use of Rose Otto to make Attar Gulab (Rose Otto co-distilled over Mysore Sandalwood oil).
Ancient Wisdom
Bringing you centuries of alchemy, straight from the source
Emperor Jahangir
Son-in-law of Salima and husband of Nur Jahan, Emperor Jahangir (1569-1627) wrote about the discovery of Gulab in his memoirs, the Tuzuki Jahangiri:
"This itr [attar] is a discovery which was made during my reign through the efforts of the mother of Nur-Jahan Begam...It is of such strength in perfume that if one drop be rubbed on the palm of the hand it scents a whole assembly, and appears as if many red rosebuds had bloomed at once. There is no other scent of equal excellence to it. It restores hearts that have gone and brings back withered souls."

TIPS AND TRICKS
How-to
Attar Gulab is unlike other rose-based perfumes in the market. Synthetic rose ingredients are approximations of the natural product, and sometimes more sweet or floral than actual roses. Attar Gulab smells like a freshly cut rose, with the fragrant undertones of Mysore Sandalwood. It's sweet but also deep.

Deg-bhapka distillation
Attar Gulab is distilled using an ancient technique called the deg-bhapka system. Archaeological evidence of terracotta stills from the Indus Valley Civilisation indicates this method was in use thousands of years ago.
Rose petals (of the highly fragrant Damascan rose, or Rose Otto) and water are poured into copper vats (degs), which are then sealed shut with mud. A bamboo pipe connects the deg to the copper receiver (bhapka) which is placed in cold water.
The degs are gently heated with natural fuel, creating steam inside. The steam carries the fragrant molecules from the petals through the bamboo pipe into the bhapka, where it condenses over Mysore Sandalwood Oil. The Sandalwood Oil not only absorbs the rose, but transforms through the heat of the process, resulting in Attar Gulab.

FAQ
What makes your perfumes special?
If you use your perfume a few times a day, every day, it could last up to six months. If you're using them on special occasions, they can last years.
In terms of longevity, our perfumes can last for years and years. Keep them away from extreme heat to avoid damaging the scent.
Once you apply the perfume, it will last on your skin for hours. We use a base of Organic Jojoba Oil because it's odourless and also because it's similar to our skin's natural sebum. This means that when you apply it on your skin, the Jojoba Oil will hydrate it, so the perfume can sit on top rather than sink in and disappear. You may not notice your perfume after ten or so minutes due to olfactory fatigue, but people around you will still notice it.
